Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands
Purpose
The purpose of the course is for students to acquire theoretical and practical insights into the music theory which is a written foundation under Western music (including art music, folk music, and popular music). Through lectures, home assignments, exercises, discussion, and collaborative teaching the student learns to use and impart music theory in writing and speech.
Content
The course is an organized and gradual introduction to • Basic music theory • Notation • Time signatures • Key signatures • Musical terms • Harmonics • Auditory training • Teaching processes in music education
Learning and teaching approaches
The teaching is ordered into a weekly lecture with discussion, exercises, and examples every week. The students work with home assignments and give presentations to the class where they explain to the others how they have solved certain assignments. Through the course smaller written assignments are solved in class. Presentations and written assignments count towards active participation in the course.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Use basic music theory in their own musical activities and impart this theory in writing and speech • Describe the music theoretical abilities that are required to be able to teach music in public school • Analyse melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic contexts and with basis in these be able to teach others in musical and music theoretical contexts
Assessment method
Active participation Through the course the students must fulfil some study assignments. These assignments must be presented to the teacher and/or the classmates. The teacher assesses the achievements on an on-going basis and the students get formative feedback.
