Purpose
The purpose of the course is for students to acquire insights into the relation between music and tradition, emphasizing notions of tradition, the role of music tradition at school and in general society, the meaning of music tradition in music education and how notions of tradition appear in curriculums, syllabuses and in teaching.
Content
During the course the main features of music and tradition are covered from a theoretical and practical viewpoint. The parts are: • Music and tradition as a theoretical and practical phenomenon • Music tradition in a didactic and pedagogical perspective • Singing, music and tradition • The meaning of notions of tradition at school and in general society • The curriculum for music (Námsætlanin fyri tónleik) in the public school and teaching processes that are recommended in music, singing and ensemble playing – with a special emphasis on notions of tradition
Learning and teaching approaches
The teaching is ordered into a weekly lecture with discussion, exercises, and examples every week. Texts are read and discussed and then put into context with examples from school and society. Learning and teaching approaches include reading texts, lectures and discussion, exercises, home assignments and presentations from the students, in addition to a written home assignment at the end of the course.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain the purpose of tradition in music as subject in the Faroese public school • reflect on notions of music tradition in a cultural, didactic, and pedagogical perspective • assess the meaning of notions of tradition at school and in general society • compare and discuss the interplay between, singing, music, school, and notions of tradition • explain how tradition and notions of tradition appear in curriculums, syllabuses and in teaching • compile an appropriate music programme for public school use with basis in music tradition
