Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to give the students an insight into drama as an art form and as an area of teaching in the primary school. The student must gain knowledge of how drama (and the tools that are central to drama) can help to strengthen the self-awareness and self-expression of children and young people today, and how this art form can be included in the teaching of many of the other subjects in primary school
Content
The course is in 6 parts. • Drama as an art form • Drama as part of Faroese culture • Drama as part of teaching in the Faroese primary school • Drama – courage to perform • Drama – self-understanding and body awareness • Drama – roleplaying and short stories
Learning and teaching approaches
We use different teaching approaches: Presentations from lecturers and guest lecturers, presentations from the students, group work, discussion forum, various drama exercises
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain what characterizes drama as an art form • explain what role drama has in the cultural life of the Faroe Islands • explain how drama is included in teaching in the primary school • explain how drama can be part of interdisciplinary collaboration in the primary school • reflect on how a teacher can develop the students' ability to perform by using tools from drama • show with examples how a teacher can develop students' body language and body awareness by including tools from drama • assess which drama exercises, drama plays and short stories can be included in the teaching in the primary school
Assessment method
The examination is in two parts The students must write a synopsis based on one or more of the 6 content-parts. The synopsis will be defended orally (The form of the exam is described in detail in a separate document)
