Purpose
The purpose of the course is to offer students the opportunity to gain insight into and experience the role of the teacher and to cope with the varied responsibilities that are typical of the profession – particularly aimed at students who need Special Educational support in primary and upper secondary schools. The practicum can take place in a regular school class, a special class, in a team for teachers in special education i the primary and upper secondary school or in a special school.
Content
The course is divided into 5 parts. The first two comprise general pedagogical competences: - Classroom management - Relational competences The other three comprise pedagogical content competences and are linked to Special Education. These include: - Ability to see the link between the curriculum, the annual lesson plans, and teaching plans that are designed for pupils who have difficulty achieving the expected learning outcomes. - Ability to evaluate teaching materials and choose fit-for-purpose materials. - Ability to organise pupil-centred learning, which is focused on specific topics and achieves constructive alignment between the relevant curriculum and learning outcomes.
Learning and teaching approaches

Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • organise a lesson plan for teaching between 4 to 10 sessions. This plan can be based on a specific school subject or on interdisciplinary study • evaluate the kind of teaching materials – both paper and electronic – suitable for Special Education • decide on the appropriate teaching approaches for Special Education • evaluate how one can practise pupil-centred teaching • reflect on and give examples of teacher challenges and tasks in Special Education • evaluate and discuss one’s own relational competences, classroom management competences and pedagogical content competences • evaluate the practicum
Assessment method
The practicum is an integral and mandatory part of teacher education. The pre-service teachers should be present according to the given timetable and consultation hours during the practicum. The examination is two-fold: - After the practicum, the students should write a short assignment (between 6-9 pages + appendices). - A viva voce A detailed description of the examination assignment is provided in a separate document.
