Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands
Purpose
The students will acquire knowledge of specific special educational methods and tools/resources that can be used in teaching. The student will be able to use this knowledge as he structures lessons that support pupils who have challenges in primary and upper secondary school.
Content
Selected special educational challenges and approaches: • Mental retardation and the OCN scheme • Autism - tools to describe the developmental stage and Bucket therapy • Dyslexia and relevant apps and CD word (Intowords) • Dyscalculia and relevant apps • Bilingual students and the multicultural school • Bullying - and prevention against bullying at school Collaboration in special educational work: • External counsellors • Cooperative teaching
Learning and teaching approaches
Different teaching methods: • Presentations from lecturers and guest lecturers • Group work, exercises, students presenting their work • Visit special schools, special offers and “competence centers” in the primary and upper secondary school • Independent work - writing an assignment
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain what challenges pupils who have been diagnosed with "mental retardation" and/or “autism” have in primary and upper secondary school, and assess what special educational support they need • explain what challenges pupils who have been diagnosed with “dyslexia” and/or “dyscalculia” have in primary and upper secondary school and give examples of, which pedagogical tools/resources they need in teaching and for exams • explain what challenges bilingual pupils have in primary and upper secondary school and reflect on how school principals and the teaching team can create an inclusive teaching environment for this group of pupils • assess why bullying and marginalization are a problem in the primary and upper secondary school (and outside the school) and give examples of how the school can prevent bullying • assess the importance of inter-professional collaboration in special education. – Both cooperation between colleagues at the same school and cooperation with external counsellors.
