Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The course has three main purposes: The purpose is to give student a basic understanding of how the first language works as basic of communication between people on various platforms. The purpose is also to give students the ability to independently reflect on linguistic questions and discuss these in a teaching context at school and in an academic context with colleagues. The student must learn to prepare, execute and evaluate teaching courses in the subject. This is done in accordance with the current teaching plan in the Faroese primary and upper secondary school.
Content
The course is organized into several independent yet coherent parts: - The five communication cultures - Language development - Language meeting and neighbouring languages - Language technology and auxiliary tools - Dialects and name - Grammar and grammar teaching - Writing and evaluation - First language teaching and language teaching
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, cooperative teaching, topic work, discussion groups, independent assignments, writing exercises, individual and group presentations.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Do account for linguistic development in an historical context of communication. • Do account for the connection between Faroese and neighbouring languages. • Analyse linguistic changes and directions in Faroese. • Analyse linguistic subjects in various connections. • Use and evaluate use of technology and especially language technology in an educational context. • Evaluate and discuss about linguistic subjects in the teaching context. • Show with examples how to make student-based language teaching in Faroese. • Present linguistic topics.
Assessment method
Active participation. Throughout the course, the students must hand in (and/or present) concrete study products. The teacher assesses the individual study products and gives the students a formative evaluation based on the individual submission.
