Teaching Danish I – Danish Language and Language Teaching

Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The course has three main purposes: The student is to gain knowledge about Danish language and Danish grammar. Then, the student is to gain an understanding of the position and the role which Danish possesses in the Faroese society and the Faroese fólkaskúli today. Finally, the student is to learn to prepare, conduct, and evaluate courses in Danish language, that are focused on a specific age and with the various types and abilities of students in mind. This last part is to be done using the curriculum as the foundation.
Content
The course is organized into several independent yet coherent parts: - Danish language (to read, to understand, to speak, to write) and Danish grammar - Danish as a teaching course in the public school in the Faroese (the difference between teaching a native language and a foreign language) - The curriculum for the course Danish - Teaching methods and teaching materials in Danish grammar - To correct dictation and papers (e.g., to grade examinations and provide constructive feedback). - Written examination methods in Danish language.
Learning and teaching approaches
Blended learning: • Lectures by course lecturer • Dialogue based teaching where lecturer and students discuss relevant aspects of teaching Danish. • Individual and group work based on selected teaching themes Furthermore, students will get the opportunity to prepare and conduct short teaching activities, as well as to present their own work to their fellow students.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain Danish grammar • explain the curriculum for Danish in the Faroese fólkaskúli • point to the challenges and the opportunities that are a part of teaching a foreign language. • evaluate teaching materials and assemble teaching materials suitable for a specific age and a specific target group (students with different prerequisites for learning). • correct and grade students’ written performances – both papers, grammar assignments, and dictations • provide constructive feedback – both to papers, grammar assignments, and dictations • provide concrete examples of how a course in Danish language and Danish grammar can be organized.
Assessment method
Active participation. Through the course, the student must execute some assignments. These assignments are to be handed in or presented to the lecturer and/or fellow students. The lecturer evaluates the performances continuously, and the students receive formative feedback.
