A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to offer students the opportunity to gain insight into and experience the role of the teacher and to cope with the varied responsibilities that are typical of the profession within the ethos of teaching Danish as a foreign language.
Content
The course is divided into 5 parts. The first two comprise general pedagogical competences: - Classroom management - Relational competences The other three comprise pedagogical content competences and are contextualised within the ethos of the teaching of Danish as a foreign language in the compulsory schools. These include: - Ability to see the link between the curriculum and the annual lesson plans. - Ability to evaluate teaching materials and choose fit-for-purpose materials. - Ability to organise student-centred learning, which is focused on specific topics and achieves constructive alignment between the relevant curriculum and learning outcomes.
Learning and teaching approaches
Blended learning: • Lectures by course lecturer and guest lecturers • Group work • Supervision by the course leader and the practicum supervisors • Practicum • Assignment
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • explain what students should learn in Danish as a foreign language in the compulsory schools • organise a lesson plan for teaching between 4 to 10 sessions. This plan can be based both in teaching of Danish and how the subject can be part of interdisciplinary study in the compulsory school • evaluate the kind of teaching materials – both paper and electronic – suitable for Danish as a foreign language • decide on the appropriate teaching approaches for Danish as a foreign language • evaluate how one can practise student-centred teaching in Danish as a foreign language • reflect on and give examples of teacher challenges in Danish as a foreign language • evaluate and discuss one’s own relational competences, classroom management competences and pedagogical content competences • evaluate the practicum
Assessment method
The practicum is an integral and mandatory part of teacher education. The pre-service teachers should be present according to the given timetable and consultation hours during the practicum. The examination is two-fold: - After the practicum, the students should write a short assignment (between 6-9 pages + appendices). - A viva voce A detailed description of the examination assignment is provided in a separate document.
