ECTS
10
Prerequisites
Students must be enrolled at NÁD as preservice teachers.
Purpose
To prepare the students to teach mathematics in grades 6-10 in Faroese primary schools. The students should develop a clear understanding of the mathematical didactic theory and methods. In addition, the students should acquire research-based knowledge on how teaching can be planned and completed in relation to this content in order to support pupils’ development, while taking into account pupils’ varying cognitive and social preconditions.
Content
Focusing on 6-10 grade in primary school, the content in the course involves: • Teaching for relational and instrumental understanding of mathematical content. • Mathematical competence, content, and curriculum. • Theory concerning (1) mathematical learning by appropriation and (2) mathematical learning by participation. • Activity based teaching, the role of the teacher, communication and socio-mathematical norms. • Methods of evaluating in mathematics education. • Theory of IT in mathematics education.
Learning and teaching approaches
Groupwork, class assignments, lectures, self-study, home assignments, presentations and classroom discussions.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should be able to: • Explain significant mathematical didactic theory • Describe socio-mathematical norms and teacher role in a student- and activity based teaching of mathematics. • Show examples of teaching for (1) instrumental understanding, (2) relational understanding, (3) learning by activity based mathematics. • Intertwine mathematical didactical theory with concrete teaching examples in 6-10 grade in primary school. • Explain and justify how a teacher can prepare, complete and evaluate inspirational and substantial mathematics teaching, with reference to mathematics education theory.
Assessment method
The assessment is in two parts: 1) A written exam. 2) By the end of the course, the students must hand in a synopsis, written in groups of 2 – 3 students. The synopsis is then defended orally. One collective grade will be given for both parts, and students are graded individually.
