Purpose
The course is in two main parts: Special education: The purpose is to give the student an insigth into special pedagogy as a special task in the public school and as an integrated part of the general pedagogy. In addition, the student must acquire knowledge about students´ rights and the school´s obligations in relation to students who have difficulty doing well in primary and upper secondary school. IT didactics: The purpose is to give the student an insight into IT didactic challenges in the public school in the Faroes and IT didactic trends in the present. Students will have the opportunity to carry out practical exercises which show IT didactic possibilities as well as challenges.
Content
Special education • Special education as a separate field or as part of general teaching (general pedagogy) • Special educational trends in the 21st century • Law, executive order and other governing documents in the area of special education • The special educational landscape in the Faroe Islands • The diagnosis and the diagnostic system ICD 11 and DSM 5. • Special education – theories and methods • Differentiation and inclusive pedagogy • Interdisciplinary collaboration – and collaboration with parents IT didactics • The student at school – seen through IT didactic lenses • The school as an IT didactic border field • The teacher as a specialist or as an apprentice • The role of parents • Practical exercises – selected tools
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, guest lectures, case work, students give presentations, exercises, individuel assigments, video clip, discussion groups and logbook.
Learning outcomes
Special education: On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Clarify what characterizes special education per se and as part of the public school system • Explain which rights students have, and which obligations the school and the teacher have when it comes to special educational challenges • Describe the special education landscape in the Faroe Islands • Differentiate between different diagnostic problems • Assess and divide on how teaching can be organized so that all students´ needs are met • Assess the advantages and disadvantages of interprofessional collaboration • Discuss the concepts of “differentiated teaching” and “inclusive pedagogy” IT didactics: On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Assess the IT prerequisites and skills of today´s children • Assess which advantages and disadvanteges are linked to selected IT didactic tools • Asses children´s IT skills in today´s school • Discuss what role parents have seen through IT didactic lenses • Describe the public school challenges in relation to information technology • Master at least one IT didactic teaching tool that can be used directly in teaching
Assessment method
Active participation. To pass the course, the student must • Attend classes • Participate in discussions and group work • Write a logbook throughout the course • Make short presentations throughout the course
