Purpose
To give students an understanding of how second/foreign languages are learned, and to identify the differences between first and second language acquisition and their relevance to the Faroese context for English as a foreign language.
To give an overview of the various socio-cultural and psychological factors that contribute to the development of the English as a foreign language teacher.
Content
Definition and characteristics of Foreign language acquisition & Second language acquisition.
Comparison of First language acquisition & Second language acquisition.
Critical periods for First language acquisition and the role of age in Second language acquisition.
Socio cultural & socio-psychological factors significant to the development of the pre-service teacher in English as a foreign language teaching context.

▪ Online discussion questions on Moodle to cover syllabus sections.
▪ Pair student work designing tool boxes for peer learning.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to:
• Identify the principles of Foreign language acquisition and explain its influence on foreign language learning.
• Identify the principles of Second language acquisition and explains its influence on foreign language learning.
• Analyse the challenges involved in learning English as a foreign language in the context of the Faroese school system.
• Analyse how Teacher cognition. Teacher self efficacy and Classroom management contribute to effective teaching.
• Understand how Inclusive education & culturally responsive pedagogy can be implemented in teaching.

Online discussion questions requiring application of Second language acquisition theoretical basis to English as a foreign language in Faroese classrooms.
Webquest design for theoretical concepts. (Peer & teacher assessment)
