Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The course has three main purposes: To gain knowledge and understanding of European history, with special focus on the history after 1750. To acquire competences to work with history, by learning to use the methodologies relevant to history as a discipline. To gain awareness of how historical themes and historiological methodologies can be used in teaching history in school.
Content
The course is organized into several independent yet coherent parts: - European history before 1750 – with focus on chronology, geography, politics, religion and reformation. - Newer European history – With focus on the industrial revolution, revolutions 1789-1949, World War I, interwar period, World War II, The Cold War and post-Cold War. - Didactics of history – With focus on historical awareness, historical understanding, temporal understanding, narrative, local history, media and internet.
Learning and teaching approaches
Presentations, discussions, handling source materials (individually, in groups and collectively), practicing searching for and handling different types of historical material. Also training how themes and materials can be used for teaching history in school.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: - Explain continuity and change in European history from the Middle Ages to 1750. - Treat the main themes through the relevant historical period and to contextualize them. - Treat historical sources using relevant methodology and to explain the reason for such treatment. - Explain basic historiological methodology. - Interpret and assess sources and materials and argue one’s conclusions. - Assess (and show examples of) how the main topics can be associated with teaching in school (for instance with levels of difficulty).
Assessment method
Written assignment, oral defense. The exam will be described in more detail in a separate document.
