Teaching History II – Faroese History

Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The course has three main purposes: To gain a clear understanding of Faroese history, among other things with regards to culture and politics. The students should be able to comprehend the historical reasons for the current Faroese society – such as economics, culture, politics and demographics. To develop skills in working with source materials and to practice historiological methodology – and to understand and engage with uses of history and narratives. To learn to determine how Faroese history can be taught in school such as understanding different historical periods and understanding didactical approaches in teaching history.
Content
The course is organized into several independent yet coherent parts: - Faroese history before the 19th century. This includes source materials, continuity and change in Faroese history and the relationship between the Faroe Islands and the Nordic countries. - Faroese history ca. 1814-1920. This includes the shift from farming to fishing industry; economic, political and cultural changes within the period; the conflict over language; different interpretations of aspects of the period. - Faroese history in the 20th century, focusing especially on the period during and shortly after the second world war; as well as changes in the second half of the century. - Historiological methodology. This includes source analysis and treatment, perodization and perspectives. - Didactical approaches and choices.
Learning and teaching approaches
Presentations, discussions, practice with primary sources (plenary, in groups and individually). Analysis of source materials, both in writing and orally. Assignments focusing on the didactical part.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: - Explain periodization, continuity and changes in Faroese history from the Middle Ages until modernity. - Explain the changes in the 19th and 20th century, including the change from agrarian society to the fishing industry, national/cultural changes and political and social changes. - Place the aforementioned events in proper contexts and point out their significance for other historical situations. - Analyze source materials with historiological methods and demonstrate the basis for the analysis. - Explain and assess different kinds of uses of history. - Explain and assess how a teacher in compulsory school can teach in themes which have been included in this course.
Assessment method
Active participation. Through the course the students will have oral presentations to the teacher and fellow students; they will hand in papers concerning subjects in history and didactics of history.
