Purpose
The purpose of the course is for the students to acquire pedagogical, societal, historical and practical insight into the work of a music teacher, emphasizing musical creation, music pedagogy, aesthetics, tradition, creative work processes and scientific perspectives.
Content
During the course the main areas of music teacher work are covered from a theoretical and practical viewpoint. The parts are: • Musical creation in a cultural, pedagogical and aesthetic perspective • Music pedagogy and didactics in a historical perspective • Singing, music, school and everyday life • Music and tradition • The curriculum for music (Námsætlanin fyri tónleik) in the public school and teaching processes that are recommended in music, singing and ensemble playing
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. Texts are read and discussed in the theoretical part and then put into a practical context in the practical part. Learning and teaching approaches in the practical part include singing and singing practice, ensemble playing and performances by the students. Learning and teaching approaches in the theoretical part include reading texts, lectures and discussion, exercises, home assignments and presentations from the students, where they explain the others how they have solved certain assignments.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Explain the purpose of music as subject in the Faroese public school • Reflect on musical creation in a cultural, pedagogical, and aesthetic perspective • Assess music pedagogy and didactics in a historical perspective • Compare and discuss the interplay between singing, music, school, and everyday life • Explain music’s position in relation to tradition and society • Perform an appropriate music programme for public school use
Assessment method
The examination is in two parts: - 1. part: A practical examination to be held around 2/3 into the course, and participation in the practical exam is required to enter the oral examination - 2. Partur: Oral theoretical examination to be held at the end of the course
