Teaching Danish II – Genre Didactics

A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands
Purpose
The course has three main purposes: The student is to gain insight into the genres central to the course Danish in the public school in the Faroese. The student is to learn how to analyze and interpret exemplary texts belonging to the various genres. And the student is to learn to prepare, conduct, and evaluate teaching in the selected genres. This last part is to be done using the curriculum as the foundation.
Content
The course is organized into several independent yet coherent parts: - Genre didactics – relevant Danish technical terms in textual analysis - Fiction: e.g., the novel, the short story, the poem, the play - Non-fiction: e.g., the speech, the documentary - The extended notion of the text and new genres - Courses which are applicable to the different genres.
Learning and teaching approaches
Blended learning: • Lectures by course lecturer • Dialogue based teaching where lecturer and students discuss relevant aspects of teaching Danish. • Individual and group work based on selected teaching themes Furthermore, students will get the opportunity to prepare and conduct short teaching activities, as well as to present their own work to their fellow students.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, students must be able to: • Explain what the curriculum says about the contents of Danish as well as about the various genres • Explain what characterizes the various genres as well as the differences between them. • Analyze and interpret different genres – both fiction and non-fiction • Evaluate how to use new genres in teaching Danish – e.g., film, TV-series, and podcast • Evaluate which genres and which texts are appropriate to use in the lower and the upper grades, respectively, in the public school in the Faroese. • To organize a course where students work with either one genre, or where two or more genres are intertwined. • Evaluate students’ performances when dealing with selected genres – and to provide constructive feedback.
Assessment method
Written examination (6 hours) The examination is divided into two main parts. The student - is to analyse and interpret one or several selected texts - is to evaluate and provide examples of how this text (or these texts) can be used in teaching Danish in the Faroese fólkaskúli.
