Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The purpose of the course is for the student to gain an understanding of the didactics of physical activity and of human anatomy and physiology to arrange lessons in the core subjects of school curriculum in physical education.
Content
The course consist of three main objectives: - Introductory human physiology and anatomy - Introductory didactics of physical education - School curriculum and practical physical education
Learning and teaching approaches
Theoretical part: Lectures, guest lectures, independent assignments, group assignments, presentations, discussions. Practical part: Exercises, preparation, teaching, evaluation, excursions etc.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student should be able to: - describe introductory human physiology and anatomy - prepare and carry out a planned lesson in physical activity within the school curriculum built on warm up, exercise and play - adapt and develop physical activities based on didactical theories and principles - show diversified teaching approaches in physical education which motivate and inspire children to a wide spectrum of physical literacy and development of life long physical activity and joy of movement. - create a student centered and differentiated teaching in physical education that supports each student – including students with special needs or special skills. - evaluate, reflect on, discuss and adapt approaches to teaching physical education based on theoretical and empirical considerations.
Assessment method
There will be a combined combined theoretical and practical examination: (1) Students will submit a written assignment where they discuss how to prepare a lesson in physical education. They are to discuss which age and class the lesson is prepared for as well as what the purpose of the lesson is, which didactical considerations it is based on, relevant aspects of human physiology and anatomy and evaluation methods used. (2) The students are to teach their fellow students in the planned physical education lesson in a practical setting follow by at short oral examination. The written assignment and the practical session will be evaluated as a whole. Students are allowed to work individually or in groups of two. (Complete instructions for the assessment method are given in a separate document)
