Prerequisites
A student of teacher education in the Faculty of Education, the University of the Faroe Islands.
Purpose
The purpose of the Swimming Teacher Course is for the student to gain teaching competencies for aquatic activities in a school setting to develop childrens’ svim competencies and lifesaving skills in all aquatic settings. The student will also develop his or her own lifeguard and water safety skills and first aid skills.
Content
The course will cover three main objectives: - Lifeguard and water safety training - Swim Competency Development - Teaching practice in school swimming
Learning and teaching approaches
Diverse teaching methods and settings are used during the course. Teachings will be carried out in classrooms, indoor swimming pools and outdoor at lakes and sea. Teacher practice is part of the course.
Learning outcomes
When the course has been completed the student should be able to: - describe the didactical concepts for swim teaching in school settings to motivate children to develop swim competencies and safety in indoor and outdoor aquatic settings. - prepare and carry out a structured swimming lesson for an objective within the school curriculum. - show diversified teaching approaches and create safe and motivating lesson plans for indoor as well as outdoor settings. - prevent injury and carry out lifesaving of swimmers in need according to present recommendations. - create a student centred and differentiated teaching in swimming that supports each student at the level they are at – also students with special needs or special skills. - evaluate, reflect on, discuss and adapt approaches to swim competency teaching based on theoretical and empirical considerations.
Assessment method
The examination is in three parts: 1. The student must pass the lifeguard test. 2. During the teacher practice the student will prepare, instruct, observe and evaluate swim teaching in a public or private school. 3. In a written assignment the student describes the plan, execution and evaluation of the teacher training and shows the conscious choice of methods based on theoretical didactics of swimming.
