Purpose
The purpose of the course is to offer students a basic introduction to law, i.e. to legal institutions, different legal disciplines and legal method, so that the students are prepared for, and develop preconditions for, further acquiring legal knowledge and skills. The course appeals both to those who are starting legal studies at the bachelor level, and students of other programs, where a basic knowledge of law is considered relevant, either as an elective or as a compulsory course. In addition, the course is suitable for non-lawyers, whether ordinary citizens or fx public administrators who want to enhance their legal skills and knowledge.

Skeiðið er skipað í tveir høvuðspartar. Í almenna partinum fáa tey lesandi innlit í, hvussu lógkøn skipa, finna, tulka og royna lóg, og hvussu rættarstovnar eru skipaðir. Í serliga partinum fáa tey lesandi yvirskipað innlit í, hvussu rættarkeldur og galdandi rættur eru skipað á einstøkum økjum. Nomið verður við hesi einstøku rættarøki: - Stjórnarskipanarrætt. - Fyrisitingarrætt. - Altjóðarætt. - Rættargang og dómsvald. - Revsirætt. - Kollektivan arbeiðsrætt. - Keypirætt og kravrætt. - Tinglýsing, veð og borgan. - Hugverkarætt (immaterialrætt). - Marknaðarførslurætt. - Kappingarrætt. - Tryggingarrætt. - Vinnufelagsrætt. - Tvingsilsfulnað og húsagang. The course is divided into two parts. In a general part, the students will get insight into how lawyers organize, find, interpret and review legal norms, and how legal institutions are arranged. In a special part, the students will get an overall introduction into how legal sources and applicable law are arranged in certain concrete areas of law. The course will introduce these specific areas of law: - Constitutional law. - Administrative law. - International law. - Civil procedure and the court system. - Criminal law. - Collective labour law. - The law on purchase of goods and legal claims. - Property registration, mortgage, security in claims, and guarantees. - Intellectual property law. - Marketing law. - Competition law. - Insurance law. - Company law. - Law on execution of claims and bankruptcy proceedings.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course consists of approx. 45 hours regular class teaching. In addition there will be up to 15 hours of visiting public and other legally relevant institutions. Class teaching will mainly consist of presentations from teachers, student presentations, exercises and discussions.
Learning outcomes
Tey lesandi skulu kunna: - Sýna innlit í, hvussu lóg verður skipað, í hægri og lægri lóg, tinglóg og kunngerð, innlendis og altjóða lóg. - Greiða frá og skilja týdningin av, at rættarskipanin grundleggandi er býtt millum privatan og almennan rætt. - Sýna innlit í, hvussu rættarskipanin grundleggjandi er skipað við ymiskum sløgum av normum (ásetingum) og ymiskum sløgum av stovnum. - Duga at finna lóg í einfaldari leiting á kendastu leitimiðum. - Yvirskipað greiða frá, hvussu rættarskipanin er býtt í ymisk rættarøki, og hava nomið sær eina grundleggjandi innihaldsliga vitan um einstøku rættarøkini. - Sýna innlit í grundleggjandi løgfrøðiligt háttalag; t.e. er at tulka, fylla út og meta. - Sýna førleika at loysa ítøkiligar tulkingarspurningar knýttar at ymisku rættarøkjunum. - Miðla og orða vitan og grundgevingar á greiðan hátt, málsliga rætt og væl framborið. The students shall be able to: - Demonstrate insight into how the legal system is organized; in higher and lower law, parliamentary acts and administrative regulations, internal law vs. international law etc. - Explain – and understand the importance of – the legal system fundamentally being divided into public law and private law. - Show insight into how the legal system is constituted of different types of legal norms and different types of institutions. - Find relevant sources of law on the most common cites and legal databases. - Get an overview of how the legal system is divided into specific legal fields, and gain a basic substantive knowledge of the individual legal fields. - Show insight into basic legal method; i.e. how to interpret, construe, and balance competing legal sources and criteria. - Solve interpretive problems related to the individual specific legal fields. - Present and formulate knowledge and arguments correctly and succinctly in eloquent and correct language.
Assessment method
A 4 hour written exam accounts for 2/3 of the grade, while a written home assignment counts for 1/3. It is a precondition for the exam that the student has passed the home assignment, assessed as an independent performance. The student will at the final exam have access to the internet and all course materials.

Bibliography
Materials for Basic Course in Law, consisting of excerpts from textbooks, scholarly articles, court and administrative decisions, prepatory work from parliamentary bills etc., will be available on Moodle prior to teaching sessions. Required reading is approx. 700 pages. No readings are assigned with regards to the visits to organizations and public authorities, but students can expect to get questions at the exam related to these visits.
