3537.20 - General Biology

Course number
3537.20
Title
General Biology
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
High School
Purpose
To give the students a basic understanding of biology and nature, ranging from chemistry, to single and multicellular organisms. The student will learn how evolution is a common theme in biology and how it explains the diversity and similarities of life on Earth.
Content
The importance of chemistry in biology, cell biology and genetics as the foundation for life. Evolution, Darwinian evolution, tree of lie, single and multicellular organisms, bacteria, viruses, and how new species develop. Many different processes that are necessary to have a functional multicellular organism, biodiversity, life history traits, populations, community structure, global ecology.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, essays, and tests
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the successful student should be able to: • Exlain the importance of carbon for molecular diversity • Explain the chemical traits of water and how mportant it is for life. • Explain cell structure and function. • Explain the different steps in photosynthesis. • Explain normal cell division • Explain sexual life cycle and cell division. • Explain Mendelian genetics, DNA and inheritance. • Explain evolution and how life has adapted with evolution and natural selection. • Describe phylogenetic trees and how the show inherited linkages between different species on Earth. • Understand and explain genetic evolution. • Explain about viruses, viroid, and prions. • Understand and explain about prokaryotes and their ability to adapt to a changing environment. • Describe and explain single and multicellular eukaryotes. • Understand and explain ecology. • Explain and understand behavioural ecology. • Understand and explain life history traits. • Explain and describe biodiversity and communities. • Explain global ecology.
