Purpose
To give the students a solid base for chemical appraisals in environmental and biological matters.
Content
Stoichiometry. Elementary thermodynamics. Electrochemistry. Equilibria. Bonding theories. Colligative properties. Kinetics. Crystal lattices. Electronic configurations of atoms. Chemical bonding. Descriptive inorganic chemistry. Laboratory exercises: Titration of a strong acid with a strong base, using an indicator. Potentiometric titrations of weak acids and halides. Spectrophotometry. Iodometry. Kinetics - substitution of chlorine in crystal violet. Halide titration by Volhard and sodiumfluoreiscinate. Titration of with EDTA. Spectrophotometric determination of an indicator’s . Permanganotometry.
Learning and teaching approaches
60 lectures à 45 minutes, 15 sessions of problem solving à 2 hours and 10 sessions of laboratory exercises à 2 hours.
Assessment method
A 4 hour test plus accept of reports. The 13-ladder is used.
