Purpose
That the students appropriate a thorough knowledge of living cells’ interior structure, biological function and their biochemical and macromolecular basis.
Content
Proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, vitamins, coenzymes, enzyme kinetics, reaction mechanisms, bioenergetics, glycolysis, catabolic pathways, fermentation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation, b - oxidation, amino acid catabolism, control mechanisms of enzyme activity, carbohydrate-, lipid-, and amino acid biosynthesis, replication, transscription, translation. Chemical signalling. Mechanical work by cells. Laboratory exercises: Sugar analysis using glucose oxidase and peroxidase. Extraction, fractionation and kinetics of lactatedehydrogenase from potatoes.
Learning and teaching approaches
50 lectures à 45 minutes, 15 sessions à 90 minutes of problem solving and 7 days of laboratory exercises.
Assessment method
4 hour written examination + accept of reports with helping material and NVD computer is available for writing. The 13-grade scale is used.
