Purpose
To give the students a solid base for chemical appraisals in environmental and biological matters.
Content
Stoichiometry. Elementary thermodynamics. Electrochemistry. Equilibria. Bonding theories. Colligative properties. Kinetics. Crystal lattices. Electronic configurations of atoms. Chemical bonding. Descriptive inorganic chemistry. Laboratory exercises: Titration of a strong acid with a strong base using an indicator. Potentiometric titrations of weak acids and halides. Spectrophotometry. Iodometry. Kinetics - substitution of chlorine in crystal violet. Halide titration by Volhard and sodium fluorescence. Titration with EDTA. Spectrophotometric determination of an indicator. Permanganometry.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, problem solving and laboratory exercises.
Assessment method
Four-hour written examination plus approval of reports. The existing grade scale will be used..
