Purpose
To give the students an introduction to mathematics and statistics and their application in life sciences.
Content
Differentiation, applications of differentiation. The indefinite and the definite integral. Logarithmic and exponential functions. Applications of integration. Differential and difference equations with applications from life sciences. Matrices. Basic statistical concepts. Population, sampling, processing and presenting data. Measuring average and variability. Basic probability concepts and distributions. Normal distributions. Estimation and confidence interval. Statistical testing. Frequency analysis. Correlation and simple regression analysis. Comparing averages. Exercises with examples from life sciences.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures and exercises. Training with appropriate software.
Assessment method
Four-hour written examination. Auxiliary material allowed. The existing grade scale will be used. Exercise reports.
