Title
Statistics 2 for Biologists
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Basic statistics (corresponding to 3-4 ECTS)
Purpose
To provide the students with an understanding of multivariate statistical methods with relevance to natural sciences and to give an introduction to the use of the statistical software language R.
Content
Factorial Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA). Multiple and Logistic Regression Analysis. Count and proportion data. Principal Components Analysis (PCA). Hierarchical clustering. Dendrogram. Fundamentals of the R software language. Dataframes and statistical modelling in R.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, problem solving, exercises, and consulting.
Learning outcomes
As a result of this course, the student will be able to - demonstrate basic knowledge about common multivariate statistical methods and the conditions for using them. - asess which statistical methods can be useful for an actual dataset. - apply R for getting hold of a dataset: reading, cleansing and organizing it for statistical analysis. - put up R commands for execution of multivariate statistical analysis. - interpret tables and graphs from R and present some relevant conlusions.
Assessment method
The evaluation is based on the following elements with given %-weights: - 3 mandatory weekly assignments ( 30% ) - One mandatory minor project ( 40% ) - Final oral examination ( 30% ) with presentation and questions A reexam evaluation is based on the following elements: - One mandatory minor project ( 60% ) - Final oral examination ( 40% ) with presentation and questions
