Purpose
To give the students an overview of the traditional view of the plant kingdom: algae, fungi including lichens, seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms, angiosperms and the taxonomical principles of the evolution of seed plants. And to give the students a training in identification of vascular plants, as well as to give them knowledge in the concepts that are connected with plant identification.
Content
Classification and evolution of organisms: Heterotrophy/autotrophy; algae and fungi; evolution of land plants; classification and evolution of multicellular plants. Identification of vascular plants

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the students are expected to be able to: • Identify vascular plants using a flora • Recognize plant families • Recognize the plant kingdom: algae, fungi including lichens, seedless vascular plants
Assessment method
Two written examinations. The first is a four-hour written examination that includes: bacteria, blue-green algae, algae and fungi including lichens. The second is a one-hour written examination that includes seedless vascular plants, gymnosperms, and angiosperms. Each of the examinations counts 50%. The existing grade scale will be used. No auxiliary material.
