Title
Mathematics 2
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Pass grade in Mathematics B at the upper secondary level. Skills and knowledge from or equivalent to those taught in the course Mathematics 1 is an advantage
Purpose
The aim of this course is to develop the basic mathematical tools necessary for further study in economics and related disciplines.
Content
We focus on: 1. Basic linear algebra, including: • Vectors and matrices • Systems of linear equations • Determinants and inverse matrices • Eigenvalues and eigenvectors • Quadratic forms 2. Functions of two or more variables, including: • Partial derivatives • Homogenous functions • Concave and convex functions • Multivariable optimisation – constraint and unconstraint 1. Differential equations and difference equations, including: • Introduction to difference equations • First-order differential equations • Separable differential equations The ideas are taught systematically, with emphasis on their application to economic problems. Examples are used throughout the course for motivation and illustration.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, tutorial classes, assignments, etc.
