Purpose
Apply scientific skills of critical analysis within a defined range of taught course material. The course purpose is to provide students with; • an introduction to the Marketing, Developing and Running Aquaculture Businesses • Markets for Aquaculture products – Salmon in particular • Financing of Fish Farming Business • Managing Cash-Flow – pre & post-tax basis • Managing Bio-economic and Financial risks • Capital Budgeting in Fish-Farming Business (CAPEX) • Optimal Harvesting of Farmed fish
Content
This course teaches the main economic and financial analysis of Aquaculture Business with particular attention to the Faroese salmon-farming industry. The course starts with economic theory for optimal harvesting of the fish, which serves as foundation for production plan and investment decision making. The course continues with an emphasis on farm-level economic modelling (bio-economics, optimal rotation, long-term investment in hatchery), and ends with providing the information necessary to conclude monetary valuations.
Learning and teaching approaches
70hours over 14weeks The module lectures will covered specific economicZ concepts and definitions applicable to the economics of fish-farming industry. Exercise hours in excel (problem sets based on real-life data inputs), along visiting Faroese salmon-farming/producing sites.
Learning outcomes
Demonstration of the ability to solve complex problems with reference to theory and practice. The module aims to facilitate understanding of some unique challenges specific to Aquaculture production, and at the completition of the course students should be able to understand and critically evaluate concepts of; • understanding and managing operative risks in Aquaculture Businesses • ability to perform in depth Financial Analysis of Aquaculture Businesses
Assessment method
Oral Examination (viva voce) of 20 min. Student will chose one question set and will have 40 min to prepare exam answers, during which time it will be allowed to have access to textbook and lecture materials, but not internet and mobile phones.
