Purpose
After studying this course, students are able to: • Understand the underlying accounting concepts under the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) conceptual framework • Understand how financial accounts are structured and presented • Identify financial statements and their inter-relationships • Perform financial analysis to make business decisions • Obtain insights into business operations through different aspects of accounting including environmental accounting, green accounting, etc.
Content
Financial Accounting is defined as a process of recording, summarizing, and reporting business transactions through financial statements. The preparation of account, book, and financial statements is based on accurate information and follows internationally widely recognized standards such as IFRS. It specifically provides information to decision makers outside the reporting entity including investors, creditors, government agencies, and the public.
Learning and teaching approaches
The teaching and learning process consists of three sections. The first section is classroom lecture, which stands for more than half of total teaching hours. The second section is case study discussion and class presentation. Students are advised to take part in regular and organized group work as part of course preparations. The third section is tutorial, mid-term exam and in-class quiz. Students are required to use their own ICT equipment for classes and preparation.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course, students are expected to: • Have an idea about the role of financial accounting in the system of management of the economic entity. • Understand the essence of accounting terms and to use them properly. • Understand the financial statements, including Balance Sheet, Statement of Profit and Loss and Statement of Cash Flow, etc. • Have basic practical skills in analyzing the financial statements from different perspective of different stakeholders using ratio analysis. • Use strong analytical skills and apply them to solve practical problems. Demonstrate an innovative, open and ethical mindset.
Assessment method
Students are assessed by both end-term written examination and performance review. The written examination accounts for 50% of the total grade, of which multiple choices, true and false, and case analysis are included. The performance review (50%) is determined by home assignment, presentation, in-class quiz and mid-term exam.
