3118.18 - Pollution from Power Production

Course number
3118.18
Title
Pollution from Power Production
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Mathematics 1 and Inorganic Chemistry
Purpose
To enable students to critically evaluate the environmental impact of power generation.
Content
The focus of the course is pollution from power generation. Definition of pollution. Toxicology. Examples of how pollution affects people and statistical distribution of effect (air, light and sound pollution). Climate Change. The effects of fossil fuel power generation on global and regional climate. Laws for air quality – EU standards for air quality, MARPOL (marine pollution). Pollution from burning of fossil fuels (Focus on PM2.5, SOx and NOx). Mass Balance calculation of air pollution and examples of exhaust cleaning – catalytic converters with Urea , scrubbers and electric filters). Evaluation of computer models for simulating air pollution (Gaussian dispersion and wind models) OML, ConcX, Calpuff, Airquisit. Lifecycle evaluation of wind turbines. Environmental evaluation of wind turbines (Visual, Light flicker and Sound).
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, group work, self-study and project based learning.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the class the student will be able to: - Analyse an environmental impact assessment for power generation. - Recognise the statistical tools used for toxicological evaluation. - Describe effects of major pollutants from burning of fossil fuels. - Critically evaluate scientific articles on pollution from different sources of power generation. - Apply appropriate air models based on topography, weather and urban surroundings. - Calculate mass balances of pollutants from power generation. - Evaluate pollutants from mass balances against EU directives and the MARPOL convention - Estimate toxicological effects of single components in pollution. - Calculate lifecycle assessment of machinery for power generation. - Describe the main components and processes of the global climate system. - Recognise the effects of fossil fuel power generation on the global climate.
Assessment method
- The student writes a scientific paper on pollution from power generation. - A 2-hour written exam on climate change.
