Energy and indoor environment
The aim of the course is to enable you to design building installations for heating and ventilation based on the building's indoor climate, energy consumption, durability and future heat supply based on renewable energy. Once you have completed the course, you are able to perform a simple design of heating systems and systems for mechanical ventilation. You can determine radiator sizes and pipe dimensions as well as dimension pumps in heating systems. In ventilation systems, you can determine the need for ventilation based on legal requirements and requirements for the thermal and atmospheric indoor climate. For mechanical ventilation systems, you can design luminaires for supply and exhaust and duct dimensions as well as choose an appropriate ventilation unit.
The course covers the basic structure and function of heating systems and systems for mechanical ventilation. In addition, the course goes through the hydraulic basis for flows in pipe and duct systems. The review of heating systems focuses on: • Determination of radiator performance and choice of radiator • Construction and sizing of pipe system • Planning and sizing of underfloor heating system • Choice of pumps and their electricity consumption • The importance of the heat supply for the heating system The review of ventilation systems focuses on: • Ventilation requirement • Calculation of internal and external thermal loads • Air Treatment (Change of Condition), IX Diagram • Ventilation principles, CAV and VAV systems, room airflows • Design of luminaries for supply and extraction • Duct system sizing: Pressure loss calculation, silencers, dampers, roof caps • Selection of ventilation unit and mode of operation: Heat exchanger, filters, fan, sound calculation • Efficiency of heat recovery • Electricity consumption in fans • Introduction to the use of a simulation tool for calculating ventilation air volumes and thermal indoor climate During the course, we shall work on projects in which heating and ventilation systems are dimensioned for a building.

Learning outcomes
A student who has fully met the objectives of the course will be able to: 1. Describe the structure and components of ventilation and heating systems 2. Design radiator systems and under floor heating, to meet both technical and functional requirements 3. Describe the use of an I-X diagram (Mollier diagram) 4. Determine the need for ventilation based on legal requirements and requirements for the thermal and atmospheric indoor climate 5. Determine the physical and functional requirements for a mechanical ventilation system and select fittings for supply and exhaust 6. Perform sound calculation in installations 7. Select a suitable ventilation unit in mechanical ventilation systems that meets the building regulations requirements for energy consumption 8. Describe the principles for calculating heat and cooling load 9. Evaluate whether the building regulations requirements for the energy consumption of the installations have been observed 10. Describe the interaction between the energy consumption of buildings and the energy supply
Assessment method
Evaluation of reports and a 3 hour written examination with all aid but no admittance to internet
