3179.23 - Renewable Energy

Course number
3179.23
Title
Renewable Energy
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Recommended: Mechanics and electrmagnetism or similar.
Purpose
To enable students to understand, how energy can be generated from renewable energy sources.
Content
The focus of this course is on energy generation from renewable sources. Wherever possible the learning will be related to the challenges faced by the Faroese society. The course covers both, characterization of the renewable sources – solar, wind, conventional hydro and wave and tidal stream – and the main technologies for their conversion to electricity and heat. Concerning the electricity path, the challenges of integration of the renewable generation into the actual power system are introduced as well as the problem of the necessary energy storage and its technological options as pumped-storage hydro and batteries. The learning is enhanced by the analysis of measured data on the renewable resources and on the performance of selected systems.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, group work, problem solving, laboratory exercises, project based learning, and excursions
Learning outcomes
A student who has met the objectives of the course will be able to: - Describe the basics of the renewable energy flows. - Describe how energy can be gained from the different renewable flows. - Describe the functionality and purpose of the most commonly used renewable energy systems. - Analyze relevant measured time series using relevant computer programs, e.g. spreadsheets. - Perform measurements on laboratory scale renewable energy systems. - Evaluate energy capture from wind turbines, photovoltaic systems, and hydro power generators as a function of environmental conditions. - Report experimental findings in a concise and clear way - Work effectively as part of a team.
