Mixed functional group compounds. Carbohydrates. Lipids. Proteins. Nucleic acids. Synthetic strategies. Stereoisomerism. Resonance forms. Reaction mechanisms. Spectroscopy.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, problem solving and laboratory exercises.
Learning outcomes
Having past the course, the student is able to: o categorize and explain structures of common functional groups, and tell about alkanes, nomenclature, their structures and physical and chemical properties o demonstrate knowledge of alkenes and alkynes, nomenclature, their reactions, reaction mechanisms, carbocations, resonance forms o demonstrate knowledge about aromatic compounds, their physical and chemical properties and analyse electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions o describe and explain chirality, optical activity, isomerism o demonstrate knowledge about alkyl halides, their substitution and elimination reactions o demonstrate and apply knowledge of physical, chemical popterties and synthesis of alcohols, phenols, ethers, thiols, and sulfides o describe and explain the properties of carbonyl compounds and their nucleophilic addition reactions o demonstrate knowledge of carboxylic acids their derivatives and polymers o apply knowledge about carbonyl alpha-substitution reactions and condensation reactions o explain structure, nomenclature, basicity, reactions of amines and alkaloids o demonstrate and apply knowledge about UV,IR, NMR and MS o classify carbohydrates and demonstrate knowledge about their stereochemistry and reactions o explain structures of amino acids, peptide synthesis, protein structure, enzymes and coenzymes o describe lipids, nucleotides, RNA, DNA and PCR o show dexterity and professional performance in the laboratory, carry out analysis of results and demonstrate ability to proper report writing and problem solving.
Assessment method
Compulsory coursework must be handed in on time for evaluation and be graduated/accepted in order to be allowed to sit the examination. All auxiliary materials are allowed, e.g., text books, papers, essays, problem-solutions, reports and notes. A four-hour written examination, pencil and paper. Earlier evaluated and accepted written coursework can be used in a re-examination. The existing grade scale is used. Marks are given for written exercises and the weighted average of these marks (25%) and the exam mark (75%) constitutes the final course grade.
