3533.17 - Biology II

Course number
3533.17
Title
Biology II
ECTS
7.5
Prerequisites
Upper secondary school and Biology I
Purpose
To give the students a solid base of understanding regarding how the study of life has revealed general common themes and that evolution is a core theme which explains both the unity and diversity of life.
Content
Evolution and the Darwinian revolution, phylogeny and the tree of life, microevolution, pro- and eukaryotes, plants, viruses, invertebrates and vertebrates, species and speciation
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures and exercises.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course the students are able to: 1. Understand and demonstrate knowledge about evolutionary adaptation and natural selection and how this explains the adaptation of organisms 2. Demonstrate knowledge about phylogenetic reconstruction and the tree of life and how this shows relationships between various groups of organisms 3. Understand and demonstrate knowledge about microevolution 4. Understand and be able to solve questions using Hardy-Weinberg equations 5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about genetic drift, gene flow and allele frequencies 6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding about viruses, viroid’s and prions 7. Explain and demonstrate knowledge and understanding about the vast prokaryotic adaptation skills and abilities to adapt to a changing environment 8. Understand and explain differences between single- and multicellular eukaryotes 9. Demonstrate knowledge about mosses, algae and the origin of plants on land 10. Understand and demonstrate knowledge about the importance plants on land have for life on earth 11. Demonstrate knowledge about fungi and their key role in nutrient cycling and ecology 12. Explain and understand the evolutionary history of plants and animals 13. Demonstrate knowledge about invertebrates and vertebrates 14. Explain and understand the differences in plant- and animal life cycles 15. Understand and demonstrate knowledge about the importance bacteria and fungi have for plants and vice versa 16. Demonstrate knowledge and explain signaling in plants compared with animals
