Purpose
For students to acquire knowledge and understanding of how nursing can provide support to people facing difficult mental health situations. For students to acquire an understanding of nursing in relation to the recovery process. For students to understand the importance of pedagogy and communication in the interplay between patients, nurses and next of kin.
Content
• Mental health nursing • Nursing theory: The Tidal Model by Barker & Barker, Kari Martinsen in relation to autonomy, paternalism and weak paternalism • Paradigms; biomedical, psychological and social paradigms in psychiatric nursing • The Psychiatric Care Act (Psykiatrilógin), ethics in relation to mental health nursing • Concepts in mental health nursing; Environmental therapy, recovery, empowerment, empathy, resonance in relationships, • Traumatic process and power • Relationships between patients, next of kin and staff/students • Communication with patients, next of kin and colleagues based on communication theory • Mental illnesses and their characteristics, alcohol and substance abuse • Medication: antipsychotics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and CNS stimulants • Teaching and guiding patients, relatives and colleagues, based on theory. • Required study activity: Analyse a chosen nursing practice situation.
Learning and teaching approaches
The learning and teaching of the theory component alternates between lectures, dialogues, group work and self-study. The clinical learning and teaching approach used is collaborative study. Collaborative study means that students partake in and practice nursing together with qualified nurses. Students observe, describe and analyse nursing problems and questions, and also provide nursing care to selected patients. The portfolio is used as a tool in providing nursing care, as well as for reflection, evaluation and assessment.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to: • Collect, analyse and assess data related to nursing practice • Analyse a patient’s situation based on appropriate theoretical knowledge • Apply theory to practicing and evaluating nursing in order to secure the provision of evidence-based nursing care • Document nursing using documentation tools available at the place of education • Collaborate within the profession and across professions in relation to the needs, care and treatment of the individual and their next of kin • Explain symptoms associated with mental illnesses • Describe recovery as a concept and process • Explain the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and clinical pharmacology of antipsychotics, anxiolytics, hypnotics, anticonvulsants, antidepressants and CNS stimulants • Describe the contents of the Psychiatric Care Act (Psykiatrilóg) in force • Communicate with patients, next of kin and other practitioners based on communication theory and the exceptional situation people with mental health challenges find themselves in • Interact with the individual and next of kin demonstrating closeness, understanding and respect for them • Reflect on their own psychological reactions in patient interaction • Reflect on the patient’s situation in relation to autonomy, paternalism and weak paternalism • Reflect on the views (paradigms) that may underpin the nursing care provided • Reflect on a chosen nursing practice situation • Assess their own learning needs in relation to the teaching and learning approach
