Purpose
For students to acquire knowledge and understanding of nursing, which can support persons with acute and life-threatening conditions. For students to acquire knowledge about palliative nursing, which can support people who receive palliative treatment, as well as nursing, which can support persons with terminal conditions and at the time of death. For students to acquire knowledge about alternative treatments as a supplement to traditional treatments. For students to develop their academic working methods. Teaching and learning is divided into theory (8 weeks) and clinical practice (2 weeks). The contents of the theory component is: • Traumatology • Hydration and electrolyte treatment • Acute and life-threatening conditions • Nursing patients with acute conditions • Communication with people in crisis • Grief, suffering, coping and hope when experiencing life-threatening conditions • Treatment and nursing for cancer patients • Euthanasia • Palliative nursing, hospice, dying and death • Complementary and alternative treatment and care Content of the clinical component: • 1 week in the skills lab where students practice skills in delivering nursing to patients with acute and life-threatening conditions
Content

Learning and teaching approaches
Theory teaching and learning is organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, case, group work and self-study. Clinical teaching and learning takes place in the skills lab where students practice skills based on cases. In addition, students participate actively in communication and reflection exercises. The portfolio is used as a tool to perform, reflect and assess.
Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to: • State the principles applicable to reception of people with acute conditions • Analyse selected complex nursing questions in life-threatening situations • Explain pathological phenomena in relation to acute and life- threatening conditions • Explain pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics in relation to cancer treatment and life-saving treatment • Communicate with patients and their next of kin, who are in crisis • Reflect on the importance of cooperating with patients, who suffer life-threatening conditions and their next of kin • Describe selected religious perspectives and their religions phenomena • Explain different provisions, which can be given to patients, who have life-threatening conditions and die • Explain the statutory procedure when patients die • Explain the procedure for patients scheduled for treatment abroad • Explain selected interventions in relation to the physical, existential, spiritual and religious needs of patients with life-threatening conditions • Explain the need for care of patients and next of kin in the acute situation • Explain the need for care and palliative care of patients, who have been diagnosed with incurable conditions • Discuss the patient perspective in relation to the concepts of coping, grief, suffering and hope • Explain euthanasia from legal, religious and ethical perspectives • Describe selected complementary and alternative treatment methods and describe how these methods work • Describe responsibility in relation to informing patients regarding complementary and alternative treatment • Work scientifically based on adapted project formulae • Analyse a clinical nursing question drawn from the module • Assess own learning needs in relation to the course of study
