Purpose
For students to understand the significance of nursing about promoting health and preventative interventions in the public health system and society. For students to acquire insight into the role of nurses in society in relation to health promotion and prevention. For students to develop their ability to analyse and communicate nursing questions in a social and cultural context. For students to develop their ability to search health science databases and assess quantitative scientific articles.
Content
Teaching and learning is divided into theory (8 weeks) and clinical practice (2 weeks). The contents of the theory component are: • The role of nurses in society. • Theories on health, health promotion and prevention. We will also discuss concepts, used to analyse the state of health such as lifestyle, mode of life, social network and burnout. • Public health policy framework – legislation, regulations and actors. • National and international measures and plans, e.g. WHO, The Danish Health Authority and the Public Health Plan for the Faroe Islands. • Introduction to anthropology and culture. • Considerations about communication to the individual and the public • Substance abuse risks • Adoption • Searching for scientific papers in health science databases • Introduction to basic concepts in epidemiology and statistics. • Quantitative research methods and their characteristics. • Assessing scientific articles about validity and reliability. • Article on a question related to nursing. The contents of the clinical component: • Observing the health promotion and prevention role of nursing in society. Clinical teaching will be arranged as an observation placement for the duration of 1 week with health visitors and 1 week with nurses at prevention and treatment institutions and health promoting institutions in the primary healthcare service.
Learning and teaching approaches
Theory teaching and learning are organised as alternating lectures, dialogue, group work and self-study. As well as collaborative study in clinical placements.

Students who successfully complete the module can demonstrate ability to: • Describe health policy based on public health plans • Explain concepts and theories in public health science with an emphasis on health • Describe the impact of social inequality on health • Describe substance abuse risks about drugs, alcohol and medication • Describe current requirements and rights about physical and psychological working environments • Explain the impact of the working environment on health • Explain how cultural factors influence the individual’s scope of action based on nursing theory • Explain how health pedagogy can be used in health prevention and health promoting nursing • Explain risk factors that can cause disease • Explain the significance of motivation about lifestyle • Explain communication considerations when fostering relations and dialogue with the public • Reflect on ethical issues about individual lifestyle and living conditions • Identify various health promotion and prevention measures and plans • Assess different health promotion and prevention plans, nationally and internationally • Analyse questions in health promotion and prevention • Find and apply research-based knowledge about health promotion, prevention and treatment • Discuss the health promotion and prevention role of nurses in society • Communicate knowledge in health promotion and prevention to individual users (patient, next of kin) • Communicate nursing knowledge in health promotion and prevention to the public • Find an article that uses quantitative methods in health science databases • Assess the scientific article that examines questions in nursing
