Secondary education or equivalent qualifications.
The purpose of the course is to direct the attention towards immigration in the Faroe Islands and to give students knowledge and competences to analyse contemporary issues regarding international mobility, migration and cultural diversity.
In this course, we focus on immigration as a social phenomenon in the Faroe Islands, and put this in an international context. We will learn concepts and theories to analyse migration and cultural diversity as historical and social scientific phenomena. We emphasise an interdisciplinary approach and the topic that will be presented are among others: globalisation and global mobility, immigration, inclusion, marginalisation, democracy, citizenship, integration models (assimilation, melting pot, mosaic), labour market, gender, cultural diversity, and cosmopolitanism.

Learning outcomes
After completed course the student shall be able to: • describe immigration and new demographic structures in the Faroe Islands in older and contemporary times • elucidate concepts and theories about immigration, cultural differences and society, which they have learned about during the course. • use relevant concepts and theories to analyse contemporary themes about immigration, inclusion and marginalisation in contemporary society
Assessment method
Oral exam based on a written paper (essay) about a topic chosen by the student (between 1200-1500 words). The topic must be approved by the teacher. The paper will be written individually. To qualify for the exam the student must satisfactorily complete two assignments during the curse. The assignments will be evaluated by the teacher.
Marking scale
Aproximately 1.000 pages. The bibliography will be available on Moodle.
