Prerequisites
Students must have completed the core required social science courses at the Department of History and Social Sciences, or have equivalent competence.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide students with an insight into comparative politics and enable students to discuss political issues, such as democracy, corruption, poverty and social welfare in a broader comparative context.
Content
On this course, comparative politics will be described using concepts regarding political interests, political institutions and national identity. The countries described and discussed will include: Great Britain, France, Russia and China (the lecturer will select the final list).
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is fifteen two-hour sessions. The teaching consists of lectures given by the lecturer and possible guest lecturers, as well as active student participation.
Learning outcomes
The students shall: • obtain a thorough knowledge of political affairs and systems in those countries that have been studied during the course. • be able to place political issues in a comparative context, hereunder analyse and discuss problems and issues using the approaches (theory and methods), which they have learnt during the course.
Assessment method
One written paper (mx 2.000 words) and an oral exam. The written paper couns for 1/3, and the oral exam 2/3 of the final mark. The paper has to be written individually. There is a 30 min. preparation time for the oral exam. Students are allowed to bring the course reading material and their own notes to the preparation room.
