Introductory Sociology.

Prerequisites
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide students with insight into sociology as an academic discipline, focusing on sociological concepts and theory. The purpose is also to enable students to learn to apply these concepts in the analysis of relevant sociological topics.
Content
 Key concepts in sociology such as rationalisation, gender, power, identity and stratification.  Historical development of sociology as a discipline.  Classical and contemporary sociological theory.  Topics are discussed in relation to both the Faroese and global context.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is structured around 12 sessions (total 31 hours). Learning and teaching strategies include lectures, and active student participation (debates/presentations).
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to:  Recount and explain the development of sociology as a discipline.  Recount and explain the main significances of the key concepts covered on the course.  Outline the theories covered on the course.  Apply sociology theory and concepts in analysing a relevant topic in sociology.
Assessment method
Written assignment (paper) where a selected topic is described and analysed. Oral exam based on the paper and the curriculum. The paper is max 4.000 words – bibliography and footnotes not included.
