Prerequisites
Students are required to hold an upper secondary education diploma or equivalent qualification
Purpose
To provide students with the skills and tools needed to analyse and assess the validity of formal and informal argumentation.
Content
Classical formal logic is discussed. Informal logic is discussed in relation to identifying fallacies. The course will also touch on modern logic. Participants will analyse political debates, discussions of ethical issues and academic papers in order to describe how we determine whether or not arguments hold and/or are valid.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures and presentations by lecturers and students. Students will carry out exercises individually and in groups.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate ability to: • identify fallacies • analyse and assess syllogisms • describe modern logic
Assessment method
Oral examination with preparation - ½ hour + 25 minutes. The same form of oral examination will be used during re-examinations.
