Purpose
The aim of the course is to give the student basic knowledge of in the Middle Ages to around 1750 with a special view to European History and History of European origin. The student shall • acquire a general understanding of the continuity of the World History in the Middle Ages to around 1750 • be able to formulate basic questions about European History in the Middle Ages to around 1750 • to independently widen their horizon and acquire new knowledge of the subject. The course is open for people with a general interest in History.
Content
During the course students will be given a broad knowledge of underlying connections in the World History in the Middle Ages to around 1750 as well as knowledge of basic conditions in the European communities of the time. The students will be presented with scientific literature on the subject, and their ability to communicate their knowledge to others will be promoted.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course consists of 30 hours. The instruction comprises lectures, individual presentations and discussion. The course is divided into two sections. The students will, individually or in groups, make a set of problems of their own choice within the subject area, to be the background for an oral presentation for the other students of the class. The presentation is a precondition for admission to the final examination in the subject.
Assessment method
Oral examination. External auditor, evaluation according to valid marking scale. In the presence of teacher and auditor, the student shall choose a question and will be given 30 minutes for preparation. In the room of preparation the students may bring with them the readings, hand-outs and their own notes. The examination will be a dialogue/discussion on the examination question between an active student and the teacher, in which the auditor may join in, and will last about 20 minutes.
