Purpose
The purpose of the course is for students to acquire knowledge and understanding of the welfare society and the social sector, both in a theoretical and empirical context
Content
• Culture, identity and civil society; the interaction between these and its importance for welfare society. • The “third sector”, i.e. non-profit and voluntary organizations, and their importance and role in societal development. • The interplay between structural changes in society and social aspects, in relation to, for example, politics, economy and industry, and social integration. Welfare, social organization, and social work.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is based on the required course readings, which is reviewed in lectures, discussions and exercises
Learning outcomes
The student: • Is able to explain central theories in social analysis. • Is able to explain and elucidate research in welfare societies and social issues. • Is able to structure, discuss and communicate knowledge about social science issues.
Assessment method
Oral examination based on a written assignment. The written assignment should be between 3000 and 4000 words.
