Introduction to Sociology
The purpose is to give the students an general introduction to sociological concepts and theories. The students will learn about key concepts in sociology and to use these concepts to analyze relevant sociological topics.
Emphasis is put on the understanding of sociological concepts like rationalisation, differentiation, gender, power, conformity and risk and how the different theorists use these concepts. The themes will as much as possible be illustrated with Faroese examples and put into a Faroese context.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course consists of 15 lectures (30 hours). The teaching consists of the teachers lectures and invited guest teachers. Small tasks will he handed out frequently and the students have to present their results in front of the other students.
Assessment method
Oral examination based on a written assignment about a relevant theme which is described and analysed with sociological concepts. The topic will be choosen together with the teacher. The length of the essay has to be between 12-15 pages. The examination is internal and judged according to the at the current marking scale.
