Circuit Theory or Marine Engineer certificate.
Purpose
To provide the students with knowledge to electrical power converters and how they works.
Content
Semiconductors as switches: Diodes, thyristors, IGFETs, and IGBT. Dissipation in semiconductors. Rectifier circuits with diodes and thyristors. Ripple rejection with inductors and capacitors Harmonics and Fourier coefficients Switch Mode converters without Galvanic isolation: Buck, Boost, and Buck-Boost. DC to AC converters, simple and PWM. Switch Mode converters with Galvanic isolation.
Learning and teaching approaches
Lectures, group work and problem solving.
Learning outcomes
After the course the student shall be able to: • Understand how semiconductors are used in power converters • Understand how inductors and capacitors are used in power converters • Know the common types of AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC converters • Understand harmonic currents and know how to reduce them • Dimension components in simple power converters.
