Prerequisites
Bachelor in History, Social Analysis and Planning, Politics and Administration or equivalent qualifications.
Purpose
The purpose of the course is to provide the students with advanced conceptual and theoretical competences within the study of Politics and Administration in relation to welfare in small states and islands.
Content
Based in the field of small states and islands the course addresses:  Key concepts and theories in the study of Small States and Islands.  Key concepts on the relations between parliament, government, administration and civil society.  Selected concepts and theories on welfare and measuring welfare.  Selected concepts on welfare in political systems.  Selected concepts on modern administration of welfare.  The role of political interest groups.  Selected issues on democracy and public administration.
Learning and teaching approaches
The course is based on a combination of lectures, student presentation, seminars and group work.
Learning outcomes
The student should be able to:  Formulate and communicate an advanced interdisciplinary. understanding of politics and administration.  Analyze and discuss the key aspects of politics and administration in relation to welfare societies.  Make reflexive choices between different theories and theoretical approaches with regard to politics, administration and welfare.  Identify and define concrete problems and methods in the study of politics, administration and welfare.  Reflect upon the above-mentioned issues in relation to small states and islands.
Assessment method
In-class presentation and submission of paper (max 10 pages, i.e. 4.500 words): 50% of final grade. Time bound written individual assignment (max 10 pages, i.e. 4.500 words): 50% of final grade.
