Purpose
The purpose for students is to independently analyze a theoretical subject or field and develop their theoretical competences. Furthermore, the purpose is also to develop a theoretical tool of analysis which can be applied in the examination of scholarly inquiries.
Content
The course emphasizes the ability to analyze and examine a theoretical subject, theme or problem. Furthermore, the course cultivates the ability to develop a theoretical framework or context which can be applied in the examination of a concrete empirical subject. In other words, the student will demonstrate the ability to write a theoretical essay applicable to use as an analytical tool. Furthermore, the course focuses on the ability to select a theoretical subject within the student’s field of study (History, Social Science or Politics and Administration). As part of the course, the student will indepently find relevant scientific material.
Learning and teaching approaches
Supervision and seminars focusing on how to write a theoretical essay.
Learning outcomes
When the course is completed, the students have obtained the following learning outcomes: - To select and argue in favour of a theoretical issue or problem - To formulate a research question - To find relevant scientific material - To analyze, examine and critically discuss theory and theoretical concepts - To present existing knowledge (literature review) - To operationalize theory and thereby enable a theoratical framework to be applied in the examination of a selected topic or problem To communicate academically and coherently in relation to the selected subject
Assessment method
Theoretical essay between 6-7.000 words.

The bibliography includes 5-600 pages and will be approved by the teacher.
