Bachelor in History, Social Analysis and Planning, Politics and Administration or equivalent qualifications.

The purpose of the course is to provide the students with advanced conceptual and theoretical competences within the study of the functioning of society and intentional social change.

Knowledge about:  Key concepts and theories in the study of social relationships and the functioning of society, i.e. social studies.  Key concepts in planning, planning theory and the study of intentional social change.  The historical development of social studies and planning.  Selected empirical areas within the fields of social studies and planning.

The course will be based on a combination of lectures, thematic seminars and a final written assignment.

 Formulate and communicate an advanced interdisciplinary understanding of social studies and planning.  Elucidate the key roles of social and planning studies in an advanced society.  Identify and define concrete problems and methods in social studies and planning, which are relevant to the advanced understanding of modern institutions, organisations and social relations.  Make reflexive choices between different theories and theoretical approaches and their concrete uses in understanding advanced societies, their functions, institutions and organisations.  Elucidate social and institutional change and the demands that such changes put on societal functions and intentional response.  Reflect upon the above mentioned problematics in relation to small states and islands.
