Title
Purism (MA)
ECTS
10
Prerequisites
Students must have completed BA in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The aim of the course is to investigate Faroese purism in a Nordic context. That means that the students will obtain insight into the fields of Faroese and Nordic purism. This comparative approach will provide the students with skills to see similarities and differences in the Nordic speech communities in terms of linguistic purism diachronically as well as synchronically.
Content
The content of the course is divided into two parts: One diachronic part and one synchronic part. In both parts Faroese purism will be the central part in comparison with purism in other Nordic countries. In the first part Faroese purism will be described from a historical comparative point of view, and in the latter part the purism will be described from a synchronic point of view. The synchronic part is mostly concerned with Faroese purism, in particular from a sociolinguistic point of view.
Learning and teaching approaches
The duration of the course is three hours a week over one term. The approaches used are class-based teaching and student presentations.
