BA degree in Faroese or other equivalent preconditions. This course may also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).

To gain fundamental knowledge about the study of place names throughout history and today.

The course examines how information about Faroese place names is ascertained, their sources and research in the field.

The duration of the course is three hours a week over one semester. The approaches used are class-based teaching and student presentations.

Successful students are able to demonstrate an understanding of the theories applied to place name studies at an advanced level and to demonstrate the ability to: • explain in detail concepts and scientific terms relating to research in the field • categorize place names competently • account for Faroese sources on place names • explain how information on Faroese place names is ascertained • give an overview of Faroese research on place names

Six-hour written examination.
