Prerequisites
Students must have completed the BA in Faroese with good marks or have equivalent qualifications. This course can also be taken as an individual course with other prerequisites (please refer to the academic programme in force).
Purpose
The course is an introduction into dialectology, and the students shall obtain knowledge of the discipline of dialectology and the methods used, when dialect studies are conducted. The students shall learn about different methods in dialect studies and be able to evaluate advantages and disadvantages in different dialectological methods. In addition the students themselves shall learn how to conduct a dialect study and obtain skills about methods and other practical work relating to collecting and analysing data of spoken language.
Content
The content falls into two parts: one theoretical and one practical part. In the theoretical part theories and methods are discussed as well as a selection of dialect studies will be discussed, and on this basis the students shall learn how to evaluate the content and methods. In the practical part the students will do fieldwork by collecting dialect material. In this way the students learn how to prepare fieldwork in a given dialect, to collect data, and then analyse and present the data in class.
Learning and teaching approaches
Teacher’s lectures and students’ presentations and students’ fieldwork. The duration of the course is three hours a week in one semester.
Learning outcomes
Successful students can demonstrate that they have acquired: • Theoretical knowledge of dialectology as a branch of linguistics • Knowledge about dialectal variation in the Faroes • Knowledge about how dialect studies can be carried out in practice • Good knowledge of working with collected data. • Basis for critical evaluation of collected material.
Assessment method
Six-hours written examination. Students are allowed to bring all material from the lessons in the examination.
